In class I read a book by David Walliams. It was called Ratburger and today I am going to do a book review about it. The main character is a young girl called Zoe. The other characters are: dad, Sheila, Burt, Tina and Mr Grave. The setting is in a council flat block in a small town.
The story starts when Zoe gets ready for school. She is doing her hair, even though she doesn’t own a hairbrush. Shelia was sat on the sofa eating a pack of prawn cocktail crisps. Sadly, Zoe’s mum had passed away a couple of years back and her dad had found a new girlfriend. Sheila didn’t even love Zoe’s dad, but she stayed with him so she had somewhere to live. Zoe did her hair, kissed goodbye to her dad and strolled out of the front door to school. Everyday Zoe would walk up and down 37 flights of stairs, as the lift was broken. This block of flats that they lived in had lots of weird things about it. First, the council forgot about it so now if something breaks, it doesn’t get fixed. Secondly, it was on a tilt because the women who lived in one of the flats was so fat, she made the tower lean. Also, the stairs had holes in, so if you fell through one, you would have not such a nice trip down. Finally, a lot of children who lived there were are either getting abused or are starving because they are that poor. Zoe wasn’t one of those children. She didn’t eat that much food but she was grateful for what she got.
That’s all I’m going to say as it might spoil it for you if you read it. You’ll have to read it to find out what happens! I think this book is very good and humorous. David Walliams is a great author and comedian, and being a comedian means his jokes come into his writing. This has to be one of the best books I’ve ever read. The illustrator (Quentin Blake) is really good at bring the characters alive. My favorite characters is Zoe and her dad because at the end of the story they do something really brave. The characters I dislike the most are Sheila and Burt because they are both very, very, very mean and selfish.
