Happy New Year!!! Chinese New Year is almost near. This year is the year of the Rooster. Last year was the year of the Monkey and next year is going to be the year of the Dog. I was born in the year of the Dog. I am now going to tell you all about how people celebrate Chinese New Year.
A long time ago, 12 animals were quarrelling over who the next year was going to be named after. Their arguing disturbed the emperor of China; the emperor suggested that they should have a race across the river, and that the order that they finish in will be the order they name the years in. So the race began, and they all set off across the river. The rat was struggling to swim so, he thought of a plan. The rat’s plan was to grab hold of the Ox’s tail and climb across to the shore along the Ox’s back. That is exactly what he did, and because he did just that he won!!! The order that they finished in is: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
The Chinese celebrate New Year in different ways. The Chinese have fireworks because they believe it keeps the evil spirit away from China. People send red envelopes with money in to children and pensioners because they believe it brings good luck. Chinese always eat fish because the Chinese word for fish sounds like surplus .
