Greek Gods

At school we have been learning about the Greeks, I really enjoyed this topic so I decided to write about it. Here they are.

Zeus

Zeus is king of the Gods. He rules the sky, weather and air. He has two brothers called Poseidon and Hades. Zeus’ wife Hera is queen of the Gods. Buts that’s another story. Zeus is mostly seen in pictures with a lightning bolt, which is his token of power, defense and offence. Zeus has a temple in Olympia. Here is a picture of his temple at Olympia. The statue inside of this temple was made of golden ivory and is one of the seven wonders of the world.

Hera

Hera was Queen of the gods. She was goddess of childbirth and marriage. She is married to her brother, Zeus. She was stepmother and enemy to Hercules. Hera was jealous of Aphrodite for Paris chose her over Hera.

Posiedon

Poseidon is the brother of Zeus and Hades. He is god of the seas, earthquakes and horses. His wife was Amphitrite. Poseidon is seen in pictures mostly with a trident and a chariot. Poseidon has a temple in Cape Sounion 70km south of Athens on a craggy spur that plunges 65m into the sea. Built in 444BC – the same year as the Parthenon.

Demeter

Demeter was the goddess of the harvest, agriculture and law. She was she mother of Persephone. When Persephone was abducted by Hades, Demeter was distraught with grief. Persephone was the goddess of spring.

Ares

Ares is the God of War. He is the son of Zeus and Hera and is often depicted in his war chariot. His son’s are Phobos (fear) and Deimos (terror). He was defeated by his sister Athena in the Trojan war. He once turned into a boare and gorged Adonis (a man who Aphrodite liked) to death with tusks, as he was filled with jealousy.

Athena

Athena was the goddess of wisdom, battle strategy, courage, inspiration and many more. But the weird thing about her is that she was not born like you and me, she was born … out of Zeus’ head for he had a tremendous headache and he asked Hephaestus( the blacksmith god) to cut open his head and out she popped.(If you think that’s weird, wait till you hear how Aphrodite was born.) Athena is quite often seen with a spear and her symbol is the owl.

Hephaestus

Hephaestus is the god of the forge and machinery. Being the god of machinery, he was able to succeed in all craftwork such as Achilles’ armour. Born with a limp, he was once thrown of Olympus by his mother Hera. To get revenge, he tricked her into sitting into a chair that had secret restraints.

Aphrodite

Aphrodite was the goddess of love, beauty and pleasure. Born from foam, near the coast of Cyprus, Aphrodite is the daughter of Zeus. Her husband is Hephaestus (the blacksmith god.) But she had many lovers. E.G. Adonis and Ares. Her symbols are dolphins, roses, scallop shell and a swan.

Apollo

Apollo is the god of the sun, music, poetry, prophecies, archery and medicine. Apollo is the god of music, for Hermes ( the messenger of the gods) tried to steal his cattle. But Apollo caught him in the act and he said that Hermes could have his cattle in return for his lyre. His symbols are the lyre, bows and arrows and ravens. His father is Zeus and his twin sister is Artemis.

Artemis

Artemis is Apollo’s sister. Goddess of the hunt: by her side stood an army of hunters like herself. She was also the goddess of the Moon. Her temple at Ephesus is one of the seven wonders of the world – there s only one pillar left after it was destroyed by an earthquake. Even though she was one day older than Apollo; she is still his twin sister. She is often pictured with her stag, a crescent moon, plants, perfumes, gems, and special colours.

Dionysus

Dionysus was the god of wine. He was a very popular god for people loved to have religious festivals and drink wine. Dionysus was one of Alexander The Great’s favourite gods for he liked to drink and have lots and lots of parties for all of his victories.

Hermes

Hermes was the messenger of the gods and was the gods of shepherds. Being the messenger of the gods, he had to deliver the dead souls from earth to the underworld. He is often depicted with his iron staff (with two snakes wrapped around it) his helmet with wings and his flying shoes.Hermes is also one of the cheekiest and mischievous of gods.

Hestia

Hestia was the goddess of the hearth and home. She is not one of the twelve Olympian gods, for she gave her seat up to Dionysus; therefore preventing a war between the gods.Hestia is Zeus’ sister and was the first of Zeus’ siblings to be swallowed by their father Cronus.

Hades

Hades is the God of the Underworld, Fire and Death. He is the brother of Poseidon and Zeus. His wife is Persephone who is Goddess of Spring. In most images he is seen with his three headed dog Cerberus. He was not one of the twelve Olympians for he lived in the Underworld, not on Mount Olympus.
