Letter from a World War 1 soldier.

Dear Mum,

I am writing this letter to tell you I’m still alive and not injured at all. At war it is a dark scary place and all I can hear is shells hitting the ground.Being on the front-line I am in all the action it’s very chaotic but the worst thing is definitely the trenches they are just muddy, wet and dirty. Rats scuttle on the blown up ground trying to scavenge on the dead bodies, it’s awful. My best friend Henry got shot during a German trench raid. Faster than lightning I picked him up and ran across No Mans Land, which is the battlefield, back to my trench. My captain Martin Richards awarded me with the Victoria Cross a military cross for bravery.

I’m looking forward to when or if I come home.

P.S have a great Christmas

Love John,

10th November 1918
